What Causes Dizziness, Lack Of Balance And Ear Issues?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Nov 2016
Question: When getting up I feel the room spinning around, lack of steadiness, imbalance, mostly on left side, at times I feel the floor moving under me.

I have been recently being checked for right ear hearing problems. Is there anything I can temporarily take to minimize the symptoms, until I can see the doctor, if needed. In the mean time, would there be any complications?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your symptoms seem to be related to an inner ear disorder.

For this reason, I recommend consulting with an ENT specialist and performing labyrinthine tests.

Betahistine or cinnarizine may be helpful in this situation, but they are given under medical prescription.

Meanwhile, I recommend having some rest, avoid abrupt movements of the head and body in order to relieve your symptoms and avoid falling. Taking aspirin (if there are no contraindication) would also be useful.

A brain CT scan may be needed to exclude possible intracranial causes, including stroke (especially considering your age).

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Hello again!

I am sorry about the confusion. It seems that cinnarizine and betahistine are not marketed in the USA. But Meclizine is a good choice too.

So, I would recommend trying Dramamine (Dimenhydrate) and Robinul (Glycopirrolate).

You can find this drugs in all the pharmacies in the USA.

You should be patient, because you may need many days to recover from these symptoms. Having some rest will be helpful. I would also recommend taking aspirin, considering your age. Dizziness can be also a sign of stroke and low blood brain perfusion. That is why aspirin is needed. A close monitoring of your blood pressure values is also helpful to exclude possible blood pressure fluctuations.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
