What Causes Dryness And Inflammation In Nose And Sinuses With Nosebleed?

Question: Knowing you can't really diagnose this question on-line, hoping you might be able to relieve my anxiety, as I am quite the hypochondriac.
I have had for 6 weeks or so significant sinus drainage that collects in the back of my throat - frequently having to clear my throat as it seems to concentrate at or above my XXXXXXX apple.
While I NEVER cough up blood, occasionally when I "pull up" phlegm or mucus, I might notice a spot of blood, perhaps the size of a pin head. I DO NOT cough up blood, but rather experience this only when I "pull up" stuff from my throat - maybe 5-10% of the time. Frequently I will notice a little blood when I blow my nose at the same time, but not always. For many, many years I have had significant sinus congestion and bloody nose discharge.
I'm thinking the small speck of blood that occasionally comes when I "pull up" is coming from my sinuses as they drain down my throat.
I have no hoarseness, no difficulty swallowing, no sore throat, no swollen glands in my neck or elsewhere - and the cough I have is related to clearing my throat of sinus drainage.

Can you offer your counsel as to whether this sounds worrisome.

Thanks very much

Brief Answer:
These are very common symptoms and not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Allergic rhinitis and frequent colds cause dryness and inflammation in the nose and sinuses. Occasional bleeding (spotting) after blowing or clearing the nose is very common. Thus also leads to a PND (Post Nasal Drip).

2. A Post Nasal Drip (PND) causes chronic inflammation in the throat. It is also responsible for the build-up of phlegm, throat discomfort and the need for frequent throat clearing.

3. This inflammation is seen in the small islands of lymphoid (tonsil like) tissue spread throughout the throat.

4. This inflamed tissue is delicate and bleeds easily by the shearing forces created while coughing and forcing up phlegm.

5. Get a Videolaryngoscopy (VL'Scopy) done. If this tissue is identified, it can be treated and the progress evaluated by the improvement in symptoms and further endoscopic checks.

6. Saline nasal washes will help. Sometimes allergy and acid reflux must also be treated.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
