What Causes Dull Chest Pain After A Hot Shower?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Nov 2015
Question: What causes dull-chest pain after a hot shower? No pain ever occurs during exercise. Could Angina manifest only from hot-shower but not from other activities with rapid heart-rate (Tennis, Weightlifting etc?) or is chest pain likely caused by something else?

Previous doctors had suggest Orthostatic Hypotension and said that Hot Showers could not trigger angina. I have found some literature showing that hot baths and showers can trigger angina but only in one or two sources.

Brief Answer:
Not related to angina pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
Thank you for writing to us.

I can understand your concern but I would like to explain that dull chest pain is never related to angina pain or even any cardiac disease.

Angina pain is completely different from the pain you described, means in angina one would have burning, squeezing or choking or sharp pain rather than a dull pain. Also, angina pain can not be triggered by a hot shower or hot physical environment.

I would first suspect a gastric condition or some muscular pain but definitely not a cardiac one.

The main issue could be the long shower or shower with very hot water. When the heat from the hot water reaches the body, it causes the gases in your stomach to expand and increase in volume applying pressure on the walls of the stomach. This causes the pain as the stomach starts feeling the pressure of the gas inside.

However,it may also be due to orthostatic hypotension or related to vaso-vagal but needs to be evaluated further by clinical examination and various tests.

You can go for EKG and stress tests (TMT) to clear your remaining doubt and get those checked by physician or cardiologist. If they come normal (more chances to come normal EKG) then you need not to be worried about angina.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be happy to help you.
