What Causes Ear Popping And Pain While Swallowing?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Jul 2014
Question: My ears pop about every time i swallow and I have some sharp pain in the top of my head now and then. Not constant but it seems as though it happens when I have ear popping and sinus pain. I have been diagnosed with allergies that have been bad this year. Could this all be allergy/sinus problems?

As below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD) is usually due to nasal allergy and sinusitis. A Tympanogram (Impedance Audiogram) should be done.

2. The sharp pain on the top of the head is probably a referred pain due to common nerve supply in the head and neck region.

3. Get a nasal examination and a Sinus CT Scan done. Based on this an anti-histamine, an anti-leukotriene, a steroid nasal spray and regular steam inhalation will help. Any physical nasal or sinus obstruction may have to be surgically corrected.

4. You may follow up with your test results here to discuss further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
