Question: Hi Doctor,
This is regarding the treatment of my father in law who has recently been diagnosed with cancer in Rectum.
Here is a brief and details:
He is 69 yrs old and has been experiencing gastric problem for 5 years. Feeling of full stomach soon after a meal and changed bowel habits. He has been feeling tired of late. He also spotted blood in stool, about 1-2 times a month in the last 6 months which he thought was related to piles he had during early years.
He underwent regular health checkups and endo scopy 2 years ago both nothing alarming was discovered. 2 Weeks back he underwent colinoscopy and they discovered a tumor in rectum. Biopsy was done and result was positive. CT scan was also done. The gastro enterologist suggested immediate operation and the operation was done 2 days back. He is out ICU now.
The doctor said that the tumor was large(about 8 inches long) and has been sent for further detailed biopsy. Result will only be available after 1 week. Doctor also said that the cancer was localized and not started spreading and he has removed enough tissue around the area.
However, knowing it is cancer, we want to seek Oncologist feedback. What should we do next as line of treatment. How do we check if the cancer is spread or not? We also dont know what stage it is? How do we ensure cancer does not spread.
We are ready to do anything to ensure it is contained.

Colonoscopy
CT scan

Brief Answer:
Treatment is going in right direction.

Detailed Answer:
hi sir. I have seen the reports.
please don't worry, the treatment is going in right direction.
according to the reports, it is 3rd stage.
the surgery has been done as u said and I hope he will be fine in next few days.
in surgery we remove all the grossly visible tumor along with the surrounding lymphnodes.
there are always chances of recurrence of tumor even after surgery. to prevent the recurrence we give chemotherapy and radiotherapy after surgery. chemotherapy is to be started after stitch removal.

my best wishes are with your father in law.
feel free to ask further.
