What Causes Elevated D-dimer Levels And Dysnpea Post An Acupunctuer Treatment?

Question: Hi, I had a suspected dvt and went to get it further inspected.

10 days prior, I had acupuncture treatment done and one of the needles really hurt my left leg. I am also on birth control, Minastrin 24 fe. I felt a muscle soreness sensation immediately following the acupuncture and on and off until today.

The clinic I visited performed a d-dimer test as well as an ultrasound of my left leg. Their d-dimer units are as follows: 100 min, 5000 XXXXXXX Mine was 276 and they considered that high. The ultrasound came back negative as well. Yet seeing that I felt short of breath, they also performed a chest cta scan to rule out a PA. That came back fine as well. I was spotting on and off the week prior to getting these tests done.

Do you think that could have caused an elevated d-dimer level? Or perhaps a torn muscle from the acupuncture?

I have also had multiple EKGs and a stress test done, at the tender age of 23. You can call me a hypochondriac, but I am just very hyper aware of my symptoms. (EKGs & Stress test came back normal).

Brief Answer:
It can be due to thrombosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear, Welcome to HCM.

I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

You have high d dimer level with suspected DVT and shortness of breath so it can due to deep vein thrombosis.

Ultrasound doesn't give you exact diagnosis all the time.

You should go for colour doppler test.
Acupuncture or torn muscle doesn't cause that.

You should go for color doppler study of the venoarterial system to confirm the diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer.

I also have TMJ disorder/panic disorder. Seeing that the chest cta scan came back fine, do you suspect the high d dimer result to be from inflammation instead?

Brief Answer:
Inflammation can also leads to high D dimer level.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear, Welcome to HCM.

I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

Elevated D-dimer levels reflect ongoing activation of the hemostatic and thrombolytic system. So it can be due to thrombosis or DIC.

Additionally, D-dimer levels may be elevated in the setting of pregnancy, inflammation, trauma, post surgical treatment, liver disease (decreased clearance), and heart disease.

So inflammation can leads to high d dimer level also.

As you say you are suspected case of DVT and you have high D dimer level so further investigations are needed to rule out any thrombosis completely.

Otherwise in asymptomatic patients chances of other causes are high.

You can monitor the d dimer level with anti inflammatory treatment. If its level decreased then nothing to worry. otherwise go for further investigation.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer.
