What Causes Elevated TSH Inspite Of Having Thyroxine?

Question: I think I have non allergic rinitis caused due to over dose of throxin. I am a hypothyroid patient taking 150 mg of throxin. I took a thyroid function test at thyrocare and found my TSH to be very high at 24.10. Should I stop throxin ? Kindly advice on what I should do.

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
As you are a known case of hypothyroidism on thyroxin, and still having high TSH, instead of stopping thyroxin, you shall be needing an increase in dose.
Please discus with your doctor and increase your dose.
Regarding non allergic rhinitis due to thyroxin, this is not a likely issue in your case. Non allergic rhinitis if not infective is usually vasomotor rhinitis and is usually due to imbalance in sympathetic and non sympathetic systems. Thyroxin which you are taking is for compensating the decreased production in your body and thus a physiological requirement.
Please discus with you doctor.
