What Causes Elevated Creatinine Levels?
Can I resume working out? Are there any dietary supplements that I can take that won't further damage my kidneys?
Yes but not vigorous workout regimen. No supplements.
Detailed Answer:
Hello there,
I understand your concern about working out and the dietary supplements. First of all I would have liked to know if they have been able to find the cause for your stage 3 kidney disease. Lisinopril is a good drug to reduce protein in urine and improve kidney function but guidelines suggest using it in patients with high blood pressure. There are some studies where it has been useful even in patients with normal BP and protein in urine.
You can resume working out but avoid vigorous weight lifting exercises. Exercise will help you to increase energy and even the National Kidney Foundation suggests exercise as a part of routine in Kidney patients. Exercise will help you to maintain BP, have stronger muscles, better cholesterol control.
Before starting exercise again do get an ECG and a cardiologist opinion to make sure that everything is normal. You can exercise for about half hour each day and do cardio kind of exercises like swimming, walking, aerobics. You can lift some weights with high repetitions but avoid heavy weights.
Dietary supplements are not recommended for you as we may not know the effect of different products on the kidney. Protein intake is also restricted so stick to natural sources of protein and have a dieticians opinion about your daily calorie and protein intake. They will guide you based on your stage of CKD and medications you are on.
Hope this helps.
