What Causes Elevated Liver Enzyme Levels After Liposuction Surgery?

Question: Good Evening. Having a bit of a problem. Had liposuction of lower and upper abs flanks and back on March 23, 2018. Three weeks post op. Feeling pretty good until I received my blood test that was taken April 12, 2018. AST 81, ALT 230, GGT 715. My last blood test was January 2018, AST 25, ALT 32, all other tests normal. Could the lipo surgery have any effect on my liver enzymes to go that high. I am also taking Crestor 10 mg for the last 3 years with no problems

Hello,

* As per my surgical experience, liposuction is associated with removal of deep layers of subcutaneous adipose tissue from some areas which function similarly as visceral abdominal tissue depot.

* As a result of that following the procedure of liposuction, the body gets alterations in hormone secretions in terms of leptin and adiponectin, which affect at the microcellular levels in form of changes in
- fatty acid oxidation
- hepatic glucogenesis
- insulin sensitivity
- metabolic profile

* Certain antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drugs used after the procedure also contribute to some level in this regards.

* In the majority of the cases, these changes are not of major concern when there are no symptoms of jaundice clinically or other manifestations and revert back to normal within certain time period gradually.

* In a minority of the cases, where there are clinical manifestations, precise medicinal support makes a fast recovery.

Thank you for your answer. Could the Crestor raise the liver enzymes. Been on it for the last 3 or four years with no problems

Hi,

* Crestor can alter liver enzymes in some of the cases, but in your case, as the enzymes were normal before the procedure; Crestor is not the culprit.

* I recommend stopping Crestor for certain time period at present, till the liver enzymes return back to normal for preventing any further insult to liver.

There is different possible time periods for different individuals to get liver enzymes back to normal which depend on multiple factors.

On average, around 2-3 months is the average time period.
