What Causes Enlarged Adenoids While Suffering From Sinus Infection?

default
Posted on Sat, 28 Feb 2015
Question: I have been having repeat sinus infections for the past 3-4 months. I get about 4-6 sinus infections a year. I have always had issues with my ears since I was a baby including having tubes put in and a repair on a perforated ear drum. I went to an ENT doctor on Monday to get to the reason why I am having these recurrent sinus issues. He looked through my nose with a camera and saw I had a slightly enlarged adenoids and an active infection. He prescribed antibiotics and asked me to get a CT scan of my sinuses. I go next Monday. I was just curious what might be some options in regards to the enlarged adenoids?

Brief Answer:
if problematic, main treatment is surgical

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Adenoids are lymphoid tissue that is located to the back of the throat. Lymph tissue is a part of the immune system that would be involved in infection or inflammation.

Normally they are very small in adults because they shrink significantly.

They enlarge mainly in response to infection or allergies eg allergic sinusitis

Enlargement can result in repeated sinus infections, snoring, repeated ear infections.

The main treatment, if they are significantly enlarged or associated with repeated problems, would be surgical removal.

In persons where they are no significant complications , they are monitored with no intervention except to treat allergies or infection

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you very much. Should I ask the specialist about surgery options when I go back for follow up?
