Question: Hello, I have what i believe to be is an enlarged anal papillae. It is not painful, just very annoying, and I can remember as to when it occurred. I have been keeping clean and dry. Is there anything I can do to heal at home?

Brief Answer:
Need to be physically examined for a better manage

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Although anal papillae are usually harmless, they could prove to be annoying due to discharge, irritation and perianal itching. Not unusually they are secondary to some other perianal pathology like a fissure in ano, hemorrhoids, or inflammatory bowel diseases, but you did not mention about any pre-existing perianal or bowel pathology.

If I were your doctor, I would prefer the following in such case of hepertrophied/enlarged anal papillae:

1) In asymptomatic cases, do nothing.
2) Treat any pre exsisting anal/perianal problem if any, and in that case remove the papilla along with the original problem
3) If there is no pre existing disease, go for a sitz bath (sitting for 5 minutes in a basin filled with XXXXXXX warm water) about 3-4 times a day along with a course of anti inflammatory drug with proton pump inhibitor which might reduce the inflammation of the papillae and relieve your discomfort.
4) In case the above are not helpful, and the hypertrohied/enlarged papillae continue to give you unacceptable discomfort, then I would suggest you to show yourself to a general surgeon for an option of surgery to remove it.

All the above should be considered only after a personal physical examination of the problem itself without which the assessment would not be complete and the treatment might not be proper.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
