What Causes Excessive Belching And Rumbling Of Stomach After Eating?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Jan 2015
Question: My husband is 61 years old and recently I'm noticing that after he eats, his stomach rumbles quite a bit and he is constantly belching. He is healthy, although somewhat overweight and has been on cholesterol medicine for years. He also takes niacin and is on synthroid (or similar) for his thyroid, and other meds, too. Should we be concerned about this?

Brief Answer:
Due to air in stomach.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. After food, belching and stomach rumbling is due to increased air in the stomach.
2. Its usually due to acidity and ingestion of air during food intake.
3. He needs to avoid talking or eating for longer time. If he does it, he would start ingesting air, which can cause belching.
4. He needs to avoid taking any medication on empty stomach and also avoid spicy food or stress. Meals should be regularly timed and he would need to take proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole to reduce acidity.
5. A short course of probiotics to improve gut bacteria will be very helpful.

Continue other medication as prescribed.
Not to worry. Control ingesting air and acidity.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
