What Causes Excessive Mucus Discharge Along With Dry Mouth?
What can be the cause?
I notice, frequently my mouth is filled with mucus coating my teeth. I'm worried it may harm my teeth. There seems to be a correlation with the excessive mucus and the degree of dry mouth and eye pain
Possibly Sjogrens syndrome
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. It appears to be possible Sjogrens syndrome.
2. It presents with dry eyes and dry mouth, secondary to damaged glands due to autoimmunity. Thick mucus is due to low water content.
3. For dry eye, schirmer test and for oral cavity, spit test can be done. Gland biopsy will show lymphocytes induced damage. Biopsy or above test can be done for confirmation.
4. For dry mouth, Salagen or pilocarpine has been found to be useful. Good dental care is necessary, as cavities risk is higher. Thick mucus will require frequent mouthwashes as it can damage tooth. Salt water gargling to reduce infection of oral cavity essential. Adequate hydration needs to be maintained.
5. For eyes, artificial tears and wearing goggles is essential.
Maintain adequate hydration along with eye and dental care.
Meet your doctor for further tests and prescription.
Hope it helps.
