What Causes Excessive Mucus Secretion In Esophagus?
Question: I have excessive mucus in by esophagus that causes me to require constant clearing of the throat. I was tested for allergies and have no allergies. I just got a referral to a Otology, Laryngology, Rhinology specialist, but was wondering if a doctor on Health Central might have an answer to my issue. Mucus that I have been successful in spitting out has been clear. I would just like to know what might being generating excessive mucus that requires me to consistently clear my throat.
Brief Answer:
may be Gastro esophageal reflux
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
From your symptoms it looks like Gastro esophageal reflux. In this condition, the gastric secretions come into the esophagus and cause irritation. This leads to the urge for clearing throat.
Heart burn may not be there in all cases.
The way to confirm this is an upper GI endoscopy and looking at the changes in esophagus due to gastric acid exposure and also to measure the pH in esophagus.
Treatment is simple, by meds to reduce the pH of gastric secretions and to prevent the upward flow.
Hope this helps. I will be available for follow up.
