What Causes Excessive Saliva Secretion In Mouth?

Question: I have sticky white saliva and i have a hard time getting it out of my throat and nasal system. It seems to get worse at night after ive been asleeep for a couple of hours. Durring the day it only occures sporaticaly. When i wake up at night it seems to be stuck in my lungs, after hacking up a bit it becomes easier to spit it up. What seems to help is if i have something salty it breaks up the saliva, ive been washing out my mouth out with salt water and that helps a lot.
