What Causes Excessive Sleepiness In A 11 Day Old Infant With Jaundice?
Question: My baby is 11 days old and treated with photo therapy for jaundice.She was prescibed ossopan-D 2.5 ml thrice a day and visyneral drops 0.5 ml twice a day.She is sleeping continuously for 8 hours now and wont wake up for feeding even we try to wake her.Is this normal ? this is first time happening to my baby please adive

The baby of this age usually demands for feed every 2-3 hours.If she is sleeping for such a long duration and responding little,I would like to get her to a pediatrician for clinical examination and investigation to find out the cause.
The common causes of excessive lethargy are hypoglycemia or brain infection(chances are very less likely as there are no other symptoms).Even poor feeding can precipitate hypoglycemia.
Jaundice is common in early neonate and it is mostly physiological.When it is exaggerated phototherapy is needed.It usually does not causes any bad long term effect(unless the jaundice is very severe).I don't think the current episode is related to this.
The ossopan D contains Vitamin D and Visyneral contains multivitamins.The breast fed baby should be supplemented with vitamin D so there is no harm in giving this.
So please get her evaluated by a pediatrician to look for the cause of this lethargy.
