What Causes Excessive Sleepiness While Treating Sepsis?

Question: My husband was sepeis last week and is on a cefepime drip until next Friday. He is very confused.sleeps a lot and almost like a zombie at times. Is this normal for an 82 year old male to experience.

Sepsis at this age may lead to septic encephalopathy, meningitis or metabolic derangement.
Multiple blood tests like counts, blood sugar, renal function test, liver function test, sodium, potassium is required.
CSF examination may be required in presence of meningitic signs or persistent altered behaviour.
