What Causes Excessive Sweating While On Trazodone?

Question: I am a 75 yr old caucisian and have been told that I am being overmedicated by three health care professionals. I am sure they are correct yet two keep adding to the list. I have been having major surgeries since 1973 when the Navy goofed my insides up good, a gastric pullup as it is now called. MY problem, fairly bad is the almost constant dampness & clambiness of the skin causes me to change shorts, underware several times espically at night after having taken 4 meds; one in particular, Trazodone 100 mg, aircept 10 mg, ambine cr 10mg .. I in my 75 years probably cannot indure much more yet my VA mental health dr wants me to take another for the depression; cannot spell it, BUSPIRONE 5 mg twice daily..My question is whether the Trazodone 100 mg at night could be causing the dampness & clambiness espically at night.. Sometimes I think the health care professionals do not read the possible side effects as with the Last RX for BUS, the VA's own literature said not to taken if you are taking Trazodone. Thank gosh for the web.. XXXX XXXXXXX
Brief Answer:
Better to avoid taking both together.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
Trazadone augments the Serotonin level and can cause excessive sweating as you suspect. Buspiron also increases serotonin level and both together can produce adverse serotonin syndrome. It is better to avoid taking the two together.
If you do not have asthma, you could try a small dose of betablocker like 10 mg of Propranolol twice a day. It would help reduce your discomfort.
Do get back if you have any further query.
Regards,

what U would like to do doctor is taper off the trazodone 100 mg all together for I think it is also causing blurred vision.. It is the high degree of body clambiness espially aprox 3 hrs after taking the trazodone.. I latterly have to change shorts & PJs several times at night, leaving me sometimes eith little or no sleep. The other 3 meds I take at the same time are aircept 10mg, ambien cr 12.5 mg, and requipt .5mg. MY Diebetas doctor tells me that is to much; I sorta agree with him but I am getting no help from my primary... Even my neurologist tells me I'm being...He has me on carbidopal/levo tabs 25/100g for parkinsons which is well under control. I understand that the requip .5 mg is used for parkins.. The Ropinirole Hcl TABS originally prescribed for RLS. I have no cancer, sizures only TIA's years ago. Do have conjestive Heart problems but no heart attacks. I need some suggestions on how to taper off tranzadone DR. I ALSO TAKE Namenda 10 MG TWICE DAILY AND Atenolol 50mg in am for BP. works well. Please, I am open for suggestions... Thank you..Regards XXXX
Brief Answer:
Gradual tapering dpending on your symptoms.

Hello XXXXXXX
Sorry for the delay in replying.
Trazodone as you know is an anti depressant. Tapering its dose depends on your emotional health. There is no significant physical withdrawal symptoms but you might feel depressed. It would be better to with draw gradually to 75 mg over two weeks and then to 50 mg.
It has no adverse interaction with your other medication. You are already on a betablocker, Atenolol and therefore do not require the Propranolol I had suggested earlier.
Best wishes,
Gradual tapering dpending on your symptoms.

Thank you again doctor it is greatly appreciated. I am also to have an appointment with my primary and ask him about the suggestion on the prpponol 10mg twice daily.. One of the lead pharmists at Express-scripts, a major mail order site also informed me that the Atenolol 50mg was a beta blocker.. Would this interfere with the one twice daily you are suggesting? tHE PHARMIST said it should work.. It is not so much the depression doctor as it is the Anxiety that I know lead to the depression...Thanking YOU again XXXX
Brief Answer:
Welcome
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the feed back.
Propranolol and Atenolol are both beta blockers and I had suggested Propranolol before I came to know that you were on Atenolol. The difference between the two is that Propranolol is non selective and has better effect on anxiety than Atenolol, whereas atenolol has better effect on the blood pressure at the doses mentioned. There is no harm in combining the two as both are in small doses.
You are welcome to get back to me any time you need my opinion.
Wish you good health and a great day!
