What Causes Extreme Tiredness Despite Sleeping?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I'm XXXX.
I have an issue where I sleep for 7,8, sometimes 9 hours per day and I'm still tired during the day, but I have a fair amount of energy at night. I typically go to be at 10.30pm or 11pm and always wake up (with an alarm) at 8am. I try to maintain a sleep schedule, but often after about 8 or 9 days of maintaining it, I feel exhausted and just sleep for an entire day. This is really frustrating because I have classes in the morning. I don't think it's sleep apnoea, because I don't snore. I purchased a sleep tracker and it says that I wake up about 10-20 times per night, very briefly; i don't know if that's normal or what would be causing me to wake up so frequently (I don't remember these awakenings, but I'm assuming they may have something to do with why I'm so sleepy). I feel best if I sleep from about 2am to 10am but that's not a realistic schedule and doesn't fully alleviate the daytime tiredness.

Other relevant info:
* I'm 20 years old
* Male
* bmi: 17
* I don't smoke, drink alcohol, consume caffeine or any illicit drugs.
* The only other weird health issue I can think of, is that I wheeze after eating, even though I don't have asthma.

Brief Answer:
Could be a hypothyroidism or a depression

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
The symptoms of excess sleepiness and fatigue could be due to many different reasons. The common causes are hypothyroidism, anemia or even depression. These can be evaluated with the help of simple blood tests like complete blood count, thyroid profile etc. Depending on what turns out in the investigation, the cause has to be treated. If the investigations come normal, then the possibility of depression should be seriously contemplated.
Do arrange for the blood tests through your doctor.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.

Also, what could wheezing after eating indicate?

Also, If I'm underweight, couldn't hypothyroidism be ruled out?

Brief Answer:
No it cannot be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Wheezing after eating is difficult to expain and indicates some obstruction in your food pipe upper aspect. Its better to get a barium swallow test done and identify the anatomy of the food pipe. Any abbaration would be then seen.
Being underweight doesnt rule out hypothyroidism totally. There are many underweight hypothyroid people.
Hope this clarifies your follow-ups,
Regards
Dr. Srikanth Reddy
