What Causes Failure And What Symptoms Of Osteochondral Allograft ?
Question: How do you monitor if an osteochondral allograft is healing correctly? What causes failure and what symptoms would one experience if it did?
Brief Answer:
X-ray and MRI scan will help.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
To detect the healing of an osteochondral allograft X-ray and MRI scan can help. You can get this done every six weeks to monitor the healing. The failure of graft will also be detected on X-ray and MRI scan.
Usually the pain subsides in case the graft is healing well. In case the pain is persistent then it indicates a problem. Further investigations and examination is needed to confirm this.

If the graft doesn't work do they have to do another surgery to take it out or will the replace it with a different graft? Also, I attached a photo of my surgical site. I am 7 days post op. Have a lot of pain today. The last couple days were pretty good. Some of the suture areas are bubbling and red. I am not sure if that is normal or not. Not much drainage so I think that it is fine. I just want to make sure I don't develop any kind of infection. Or do anything to mess up this graft. I don't want to have to go through another surgery.
Oh and when do people normally return to work? My job doesn't let me even do light duty if I am on crutches.
Brief Answer:
The stitches seem normal.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing in again.
I have seen the attached image. The stitch line looks healthy.
The pain that you have usually gets subsided in 7-10 days after surgery. There are no signs of infection right now. It takes 6-8 weeks at least before you return to work or start with the daily activities normally.
Hope my answer is helpful.
