What Causes Fat Deposition In Abdomen Inspite Of Being A Heavy Drinker?
Question: G/morning,
I have been a heavy drinker now for about 5-6 months (pint of Vodka per day) and have gained a large pot belly from it! I am concerned it may be Ascites but I have no symptoms of it nor any symptoms I can see from any kind of liver damage!
My urine is the color its supposed to be and my stool movements are the corect color......no blood, not dark but brown as normal.
I do drink about 6 bottles (17oz) of water a day and my Wife tells me my stomach is large because I drink too much water and that the Vodka contains a lot of calories plus I get NO daily exercise!
I have no stomach pains, jaundice . The last tine I was drinking and quit my stomach size returned back to normal!
Any ideas/thoughts?
No weight loss or gain either

Brief Answer:
It is less likely to be ascites
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
It is more likely to be from fat deposit in the belly rather than ascites. However ascites cannot be totally excluded as it is not necessary to develop jaundice before developing cirrhosis and ascites.
If you are in doubt, it is very easy to confirm whether it is ascites or not and also to know whether there is any cirrhosis. An abdominal ultrasound examination would settle the issue.
It is good that you decided to stop drinking. I congratulate you on your decision.
Take care.

Hello Dr. Noble,
Would the fact that I drink as much as I do including all of my daily intake of water explain why I have little or no appetite?
I have read that alcoholics have no desire to eat.
I can eat but just dont feel like it and feel full after eating only a bit of food!

Brief Answer:
Due to gastritis and filling up with fluids
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Alcohol produces an inflammation of the stomach which can decrease your desire to eat food and also can produce some discomfort after food.
Drinking too much of water dilutes the digestive enzymes and the acid. It also physically fills up your stomach. Both decrease your appetite.
After you stop drinking and excessive consumption of water, you would notice your appetite improving with time.
Have a good day
