What Causes Fatigue After Taking Leveritacetam For Partial Seizures?

Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: I am taking leveritacetam for partial seizures, two weeks 250 mg a day and now started same but twice daily. Since I started second dose 3 days ago I have been extremely heavy and exhausted which i believe is normal, but also my left ear has sharp little pains and my neck feels stiff and I can't open my mouth to eat, say, a banana or normal spoon for pudding, so I only open my mouth a little way. Is that normal?

Brief Answer:
Not related to levetiracetam;instead ear infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

It is normal to feel a bit fatigued after starting levetiracetam. You have started to use it for the past 2 weeks with a lower dose. So, there might not be a problem for your body with levetiracetam use.

Having sharp pains on your left ear, feeling your neck stiffed and difficulty to open your mouth, all these symptoms might be related to a possible ear/throat infection (whether viral or bacterial).

So, I advise to get checked by an ENT specialist or your family doctor in order to evaluate the status of your throat/ear and upper respiratory tract and get proper treatment. You might need local (ear) drops and oral medications.

Meanwhile, I advise to:
- take lots of fluids (tea, water, juice)
- have more rest
- take multivitamin supplementation (B complex, vit.C, Calcium, vit.D, etc.)
- take good care of your oral cavity and throat
- take acetaminophen

Wish fast recovery!
