What Causes Fatigue And Severe Sore Throat?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Jun 2017
Question: Hey there,

Over almost 3 months I have been poorly on and off. Mainly flu symptoms, sinus headaches, pain, extreme tiredness and sore throat - my breakdown is follows to today.

APRIL 2017:
Tiredness, flu symptoms, sinus headaches, sore red throat, chills and breathlessness
(Saw GP for penicillin for throat and possible infection upper or flu) - did not feel better so went to ER for chest Xray and full blood tests. No discharge or congestion.

Test concluded: small shadow on lung, viral and bacteria infection (no other description) and no clot. Given doxycylin and told to rest. Mayne walking phenomena or strep but no conclusion. No discharge or congestion.

MAY 2017:
Feeling unwell still, chills, aches and sore red throat and sinus pain and headaches. Extreme weakness and tiredness. Doxycylin did not do anything.
Full blood count still showed inflammation and infection of some sort (no description given)

LAST 2 WEEKS:
I went back to work for one week after feeling a little better, but got very tired again and painful glands. Sore red throat and fatigue as well as small chills. So I rested again and went back to GP to get Clarithromycin and was told maybe tissues were infected or swollen and red sore throat and feeling unwell was that.

I now after 2 weeks and trying to work do not feel better but symptoms have changed.
I have swollen sinuses, both wet ears, swollen throat glands and red sore throat. Tiredness and small fever of 37.5. i now for first time in 3 months have lots of yellow phelm from nose, throat and chest.

GP on Friday said I have sinus infection and infected ears and no more anti bitiocs, but for ears and throat spray. I have alot of yellow from nose, throat and chest and very painful nose and ears. Tiredness, weakness. GP told me I have full blood test to see if I have glandular fever in next few days.

Why am I still so poorly with no description? if glandular fever does this take long to recover? and lastly, is the yellow sign of infection now leaving body after all these months?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Sinus infections can be hard to get rid of:penetration of medicines is poor

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Possibly your complaints are due to a viral cause which are frequently associated with an allergic component. Sometimes a superadded bacterial infection present. Antibiotics or any other medicines hardly help. Sinusitis is an infection of sinuses, the air pockets contained in our skull. They have poor blood supply and the medicines cannot reach the sinuses properly. Antibiotics may relieve the superadded bacterial infections, but the unresolved underlying infection may flare up subsequently. Taking steam inhalation can provide relief as it helps in opening up the openings of the sinuses that have been blocked by thickened mucus. Water in form of vapour will reach deep inside and will help in dilute the thickened mucus. Take rest and plenty of fluids to drink. You may take naproxen 500 mg tablet when required, in case you have pain.

You may benefit from taking Montair LC tablet (monteleukast + levocetirizine) once daily if you have he symptoms. It is a prescription medicine and you might need your doctor to write it for you. It will help in dealing with the allergic component.

The yellow secretions are normal and are due to the dead cells suspended (dead due to normal cause). They neither indicate infection entering or leaving the body. It is just a normal phenomenon.

Feel free to write back.

Hello,

Thank you for reply.

I am worried after 3 months of being very poorly I am now still not aware of the cause and now have very bad sinus, phlem, mild fever, ear infections and very bad fatigue. It is worrisome why the antibiotics did not work when I was told at ER I had viral and bacterial and to rest.

But 3 months on now I am still poorly and possible glandular fever. But I am waiting full blood tests again for 4th time.

I feel sinus pain. fatigue, dizzyiness, ear infections and very tired. Does this sound like glandular fever? - a fit girl should not have so many months or infections - and what other tests can I press my GP for?

thank you

Brief Answer:
Sinusitis can be hard to resolve.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Glandular fever is a type of viral infection and it is definite that you have a viral infection, it does not matter which virus is the cause. The presentation of most viral infections is similar. If you have the lymph nodes swollen you can call it glandular fever.

I would not insist you to press for any test as all tests are likely to give normal reports. I would strongly insist you on the steam inhalation. Ask your GP to write Montair LC for you and I hope that you would feel better.

If the problems persist it would be a good idea to get an ENT opinion.

Thank you.

So can I have viral and bacterial also at same time? which is why i had bad fever and heart rate a few weeks ago?

I just want to feel better soon and did not know anything could make u so ill (viral) for so long - and I see if it is glandular fever there is no cure!

Brief Answer:
Superadded bacterial infection can be present

Detailed Answer:
Thanks again for writing back. Yes, as I mentioned that you can have superadded bacterial infection upon a viral infection and that could be the cause of the fever that you had sometimes back.

Unfortunately, apart from antiallergics or Montair LC as well as steam inhalation there is little that can be done for faster resolution.

Brief Answer:
Gurgling with lukewarm water should help.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the update. I would insist you to gurgle with lukewarm water while you await the test reports. Your GP is likely to be right but that does not seem to be something to worry about.

Hello,

Thank you.

I have had full blood test again today awaiting result. I have less yellow congestion and cough, but still red throat and sore glands and neck - and ear pain as well as chest light congestion. I feel very tired and weak - is there anything I can take whilst I wait for blood results as feeling like this for 3 months is very hard to believe it is just a virus!

My GP seems to think Glandular fever or CFS/ ME is cause.

Regards
For the pain in ears and in neck below jaw (slight swelling) what is the best medicine to take for now? If I get a fever, do I break it or leave it again?

Yes I feel very tired and very weak - I hope to get a resolution soon

Brief Answer:
Aleve should help

Detailed Answer:
Taking Aleve (naproxen) 500 mg when needed should help in resolution of the pain and swelling. If the fever rises above 100°F you would need to take paracetamol or acetaminophen.
