Question: Hi Doctors, I am a 43 year female. I am African American. I am 5' 3'' and 135 lbs. I have been experiencing chills to the point of my teeth chattering & having to cover up with blankets to get warm. Also, I wake up soaking wet. In addition, one side of my scalp is ice cold. These symptoms have been occurring for about 18 months to 2 years. I have not been experiencing fevers or ills when this occurs. What are the possible causes or should not be concern? What should I do?

My general practitioner did blood work up last year during my physical exam. It included test for thyroid, but it show everything was normal. Neither did the blood work show I was diabetes. I don't have the reports. The other test have not been performed. My dad and one of my sister has diabetes. My mother was diagnosis with cervical cancer stage 0 at age 75.... she has completely recover no signs of cancer. However, cancer (breast, colon, liver, stomach & lung), high blood pressure, diabetes & heart diease are common my family. My father's mother die of breast cancer at 46 years and two his brothers die of cancer and the other die of a heart attack all before age 70yrs. My pap and mammogram were performed in November 2013 & were both normal. Could this be a symptoms of any of those forms of cancer? I was wondering could these just be symptoms of peri- menopause because of my age & nothing to worry about? Or just stress? If not what test should I ask my physician about I have a physical schedule for April 21, 2014?

Brief Answer: suggestions Detailed Answer: i think you could be developing diabetes. that is one option for sure, esecially in view of your family history. so make sure it is retested. a blood pressure check again would be a good idea. thanks for mentioning it. the perimenopausal symptom is a definitive possibility. the person feels sudden warmth and then this subsides by sweating. it is usually accompanied by burning of feet, a generalized unrest and such general symptoms. i think thats a definitive possibility. its called flushing however it will need a gynecologist to confirm it, not a physician i dont think these are early signs of cancer. however in view of your family history once annually have them checked. as for tests, a cbc, kft, sugars, thyroid, lipid profile and ecg should be planned i hope that helps you please feel free to ask a query if needed Dr Mittal
