What Causes Feeling Of Sharp Pain In The Throat?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Nov 2016
Question: I was eating dinner tonight and on my last bite all of a sudden I got this really sharp pain like a sharp piece of the knife had broke off and I swallowed it. I took a drink and that did not help so I went to the bathroom to see if I could figure out if I needed to dislodge something or what. I stuck my finger down my throat and felt a flap. I flicked back and forth just to make sure it was intact and attached to my throat. It is. The pain is not so bad now it just pokes a little bit. What could be poking me and it was so sudden. It had been fine all through dinner. I really thought someone had put a razor blade in my last bite.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read your history and understood your concerns.
The feeling of sharp pain in the throat indicated a few things:
It can be due to Epiglottitis as it is very sensitive part and is the one which closes the airway for the passage of food/liquids into the esophagus, and might have caused some sort of trauma.
Occasionally granular pharyngitis can cause similar problems.
Chance of foreign body are there, although less as it would have caused the same pain unless removed on its own or by the Doctor.

I would advise you the following:
Stop exploring further as it may cause more trauma.
Take liquid diet only.
Take anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen in syrup form if it suits you.
Consult an ENT Surgeon/ER for Pharyngoscopy to confirm the cause so that further treatment be carried on according to the findings.

I hope this answer helps you.

Thank you for the response. About a year ago I was at a restaurant eating a burger and I choked. So much so that my husband gave me the Hiemlick to dislodge it. It worked. It didn't create any of the pain that I'm experiencing now. I would have thought that would have been more traumatic. It's been about 12 hours now, and it is soar or raw feeling I'm sure the ibuprofen will help. I wish I would have thought of that earlier. I have not done any more exploring with my figure except the intial onset. I have to say it did make it feel better when I touched it. I was able to swallow with out pain.

Brief Answer:
If no relief with Ibuprofen, get this diagnosed

Detailed Answer:
Choking may not cause much of pain if there was not a shearing force.
But the other conditions can as explained above.
Sore and raw feeling for the last 12 hours indicate that the pathology is still there. If ibuprofen does not resolve the symptoms completely, better to get a diagnosis as we discussed above.
