Posted on Fri, 26 Jun 2015
Question: My throat feels swollen but doesn't look swollen. I had an allergic 7 days ago and had to be rushed to the hospital. Since then Iv felt a swollen throat. I checked u throat and it doesn't look swollen. By the way I don't know what caused that allergic shock. Does that have to do with the swollen sensation in my throat? Also I thinky breathing is diffrent but I could it be anxiety attak?

Brief Answer:
This seems to have been a severe allergic episode.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. It seems that you had a severe allergic episode a week ago.

2. The severity of the allergic episode was countered by the medication that you received in the ER.

3. A lot of substances are released during a severe allergic episode which act for several days. Only some of these can be countered by anti-histamines, anti-leukotrienes and steroids.

4. I would recommend that you try to remember what were the possible triggers for this last week (such as chemicals, cosmetics, food, especially seafood) and that you remain on medication for a few days. Bring this to the attention of your doctors who can decide the further investigation and treatment. It is possible to test for allergy (skin and blood tests) and attempt desensitisation if the allergens cannot be avoided.

5. An anxiety attack can cause breathlessness but not all the allergic symptoms such as hives, itching and swelling.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Yes, take the steroids. Exercise/Temp/Vibration/Stress Induced possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Yes you should take the prescribed steroids.

2. Such unusual forms of allergic reactions, such as Exercise Induced Urticaria, (sometimes after intake of some particular foods), Temperature induced Urticaria, Vibration Induced Angioedema are known conditions that will require extensive testing to differentiate. Stress will worsen these conditions.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

So having a lab test me for allergies won't be enough to determine is I have the exersise induced anaphylaxis? I will come continue to take the medicine. Alittle background on what happen. I was exercising then first I started having asthma attake, then the hives, then everything swelled up (face, body, ears, nose) then my throat swelled up and I was fainting. But the time emergency got to my house, my breathing was better. Everything started healing even before we got to the hospital!! I don't know, maybe it was God? All I was gonna have given was Iv and bendryle. Then released 3 hours later with a Pepcid, bendryle, and steroids (pepsidon). That day I are a piece of candy and a piece of chocolate in the morning. Then before exersising I ate rice and broccoli (like always). I will mention and work we had to spray paint flowers with a chemical. I'm a florist. The first time I had a minor shock was when I did the exersising too. The second time which was the worse one yet happen faster then the first one. What could it be :( I miss exersising.

Brief Answer:
Recreating conditions under medsupervision (in various combinations) helps.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Your physicians need to recreate the conditions with full emergency back-up.

2. By trial of various combinations of the conditions that you mention, it will be possible to narrow down the cause.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
