What Causes Feeling Of Tightness In Chest And Choking Sensation?
I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis with a rather large goiter, but during this my goiter hasn't seemed to be especially swollen.
I have though been told that it must be taken out as soon as possible as it is starting to obstruct my airway but I am waiting till I can afford it and get insurance. Does it seem related? Until then, what can I do to breath?
Clinical Check-up
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
These things may not be related for a simple reason that the obstruction / choking is at different levels as you have mentioned.
The choking due to Hashimotos thyroiditis can be thought of if :
1 the choking is only at the neck region.
2. This is confirmed by CT scan or MRI that the trachea is being compressed by the pressure of the mass or constricting effect of the process of thyroiditis.
3 Clinical elicitation by the Surgeon.
The possible reasons for your symptoms tight chest, choking at various levels, getting out of breath, which is happening closer and closer can be the following:
-A sort of bronchospasm one gets during an attack of asthma; I am not saying you have asthma, such problem can be due to an allergic bronchitis and so.
-Stress and anxiety can mimic the similar problems.
-Hypothyroidism not under control can also cause the similar problems.
-Hashimotos can cause but has to be confirmed.
I would advise you the following:
Get a clinical check-up by a Physician and / or Surgeon so that the reason can be found out by clinical tests, auscultation by stethoscope.
If required to get some tests done ( irrespective of no insurance as this should not turn into a major problem).
If this is due to medical problems, medicines can be started to get you relief; if surgical problem is found out like Hashimotos yet some medicines can help you to get better till you get your insurance.
Then surgery can be planned.
