What Causes Fever, Cough And Running Nose In Infants?

Question: My kid is 1.5 years 10 kg weight. She had fever 10 days back and then recovered then son after she had cough symptom , lite running nose and feverish mostly. Current temperature 101. What can be the cause? We are giving cervil syrup but didn't help.

I am sorry to hear that your daughter is sick. Such symptoms are usually caused due to certain viral infections. If fever is present, it needs to be controlled by the use of paracetamol, and tepid sponging. The mininum interval between doses for paracetamol is 3-4 hours. Antibiotics like cervil are unlikely to help as they are ineffective in the treatment of viral infections. Irrespective of the use of antibiotics, such infections may last for 5-10 days. Saline nasal drops like Nasoclear may be given in case of nasal block. Giving steam inhalation or use of humidifiers should be helpful by helping in diluting the cough. Just sit with the baby on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapour will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. I would suggest adding Relent Syr. 2.5 ml once daily as it contains a mucolytic along with an antiallergic and can be given. It will also take care of the runny nose. I would not suggest any other medication.

Please be patient. But if the child grows lethargic or develops wheezing, you would have to take her to a pediatrician without delay. Otherwise I would not really worry.

She had fever 10 days back and was given augpen antibiotic. Don't know why again this. Such frequent use of antibiotic is good? Her immunity is bad?

The antibiotics are for superadded bacterial infection, if any. No problems if antibiotics are consumed. Augpen contains amoxycillin which is a very safe drug.

She is having difficulty swallowing also. What should be her feed then?? How possible is that after AUGPEN does is complete she agains fall sick right after.

I think that you would be able to coax her to take the medicine. If she is vomiting, you can give her some antiemetic like ondansetron. You need not worry about the ailment returning. Things should be fine soon.

we offered servile junior syrup 4 ml twice for two days instead of service baby syrup as prescribed by doctor. It was by mistake of medicine shop. Please let me know if this leads to overdose of medicine and any harmful effect for this???
