Posted on Mon, 20 Jun 2016
Question: Hi, my granddaughter is 5 years old. Last two days she complained of stomach ache around navel and low grade fever. Yesterday doctor gave her metrogyl syrup ( we gave two doses) and Lanzol 15 mg ( we gave one dose). In the night she complained of pain in stomach and fever again XXXXXXX so we gave her ibugesic 10 ml at 2 am. Since this morning she is complaining of pain and after taking a dose of Lanzol she threw up and also complains of nausea. She has not eaten any food today. We have not given her metrogyl as we feel these medicines are not suiting her. Please advise what we should do. Since morning she has no fever and has had a normal motion today

Brief Answer:
Looks like viral infection of the stomach - nausea could be to Metrogyl

Detailed Answer:
Hi...by what you quote I feel that your grand daughter is having a very initial stage of viral infection of the stomach and she might land up in diarrhea.

Sometimes Metrogyl can cause nausea and vomiting.

If she is normal now and has normal stools and without any stomach pain no need to give any medication.

But I feel she might land up in diarrhea or mild loose stools - will tell you what to do then and will explain about this.

Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Regarding diet - Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Thanks for your answer. We have stopped Metrogyl but she has not had any food/liquid to eat today except water. She has nausea and stomach ache; can we give something for that?

Brief Answer:
It will settle by itself - you can use ondansetron for nausea

Detailed Answer:
Hi...this pain and nausea is because mild swelling of the intestines and it will settle by itself.

But if the nausea is so severe that she is not taking anything in..then you can use Ondansetron thrice a day. If you can get back to me with the weight of the kid I will be glad to suggest you the dose but this is a prescription drug and you will need one for it.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
