What Causes Fever With Acute Torticollis?
Question: My daughter has a 99.2 degree fever a stiff neck, a back ache, and a stomach ache. She had no energy today and was extremely tired. She practices two evenings a week outdoors with a marching band and has several mosquito bites. Walk-in clinics are closed. Is there anything in particular that we should watch for tonight? She is 15 years old and otherwise in excellent health.
Brief Answer:
Take her to ER
Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.
I would advise you to take her to ER for clinical examination.
Fever with stiff neck could indicate meningitis.
The stiff neck and the back ache could also be from physical exertion.
So it is prudent to get her examined by a doctor at the earliest.
So take her to ER for a thorough examination.
Meanwhile you can give her tylenol to bring down the temperature.
Give her enough fluids to keep her well hydrated.
I hope that answers your query.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.Barani

This answer did not arrive until the next afternoon and she was feeling fine. If it was as urgent as he wanted me to believe, then she would have been gravely ill by the time it arrived
Brief Answer:
Good to know your daughter is fine now
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Good to know you daughter is fine now.
I would like to tell you that this website and interaction is not meant for diagnosis and treatment as we experts do not get a opportunity to examine the patients. This is the drawback of online consultation.
We give our opinion based on the information given.
You have mentioned your daughter had fever and neck stiffness. I replied that these could be due to two possibilities -
1. Meningitis ( which is a serious issue)
2. Physical exertion.
Which of these two is causing the symptoms can only be confirmed with a clinical examination. Since I didnt have the opportunity to examine her, I advised you to take her to ER.
Since she improved the next day, it has become evident now that the second cause is the reason for some of her symptoms.
I hope now you understand what I mentioned in my previous post.
Regards,
Dr.Barani
