Question: I went to the retinal doctor last Tuesday..I was having flashes in my right eye..he checked my eyes and the retina looks good..why do I continue to have light flickering in the side of my eye where the laser was given a year ago. I also was given the diagnosis of posterior staphyloma but I do not understand what this is. ...please help me understand what this is...is it dangerous to my sight..can I have cataract surgery with this or is it to much of a risk..I am having anxiety over this..I am only 56 years old ..my eyes need to last me a few more years...thanks!!!

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history.
Flashes of light usually occurs because of retinal tears and requires treatment by retinal laser to prevent complications like retinal detachment.
Since laser has been done in your case no need to worry. Flickering of lights may be because of retinal adhesions and this is no need to be worried.

Posterior staphyloma occurs in people with high myopia and there is no treatment for this other than observation. But not to be worried most of the times it won't cause any problem and it will not progress also.

You can undergo cataract surgery, the only problem can occur during anesthetic injections, hence I prefer to do this surgery under topical anesthesia and avoiding injections.

With regular follow up you will be fine no need to be worried.

Hope I have answered your questions.

Thank you
