What Causes Flashing Lights In Left Eye And Migraine?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 May 2015
Question: In my last question on this site i discussed seeing flashing lights and wavy/sawtooth lines in upper portion of my left eye, predominantly in lighted conditions; particularly in sunlight. I have a hx of a recently repaired detachment in the right eye, but the present visual effect does not act similar to the detachment symptoms. Then the flashing lights were brilliant like flashes of lightening, here they are not brilliant flashes and seem constant. Now the same effect, to a smaller degree is appearing in the right eye as well, which is consistent with a symptom I experienced after surgery and the retinal specialist indicated after several dilated post operative exams it was fine.

Two days ago my Optometrist examined my eyes and did an IOS retinal image of both eyes. he was able to compare the images to my two last visits and he does not see any changes of the image for my left eye from visits a month ago and 9 months ago. He said the vitreous is intact and the retina from what he could see from comparing previous and tracing blood vessels near the retinal appears unchanged. He said the visual patterns I drew on paper are consistent with a migraine, but the symptoms should be short acting rather than constant, which stumped him. He is referring me to an Opthalmologist or I can return to retinal specialist.
Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
You need to return to your retina specialist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history and the previous question you had asked to me on Health care Magic.

As I mentioned in my previous answer migraine in the prodromal phase can present with similar symptoms but migraine will have these symptoms followed by headache.

Since you are not having the symptoms of headache , it is unlikely to be migraine.

Hence first we need to rule out eye conditions which can cause these symptoms.
Hence this requires examination of the retina by retina specilaist.
Hence you need to return to your retina specialist for examination.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
With regards
