Question: Hi, I'm 41 years old have ahd hypothyroidism for the past 20 years. Been on medication ever since. Been under doctor's care. Last year I experienced abnormal symptoms. My blood work came back abnormal, thyroid level was 10.6. My doctor started to increase the dosage of my medication (synthroid) and retesting me every month. Sure enough we were able to bring it down to a normal level. In may/2014 my thyroid leve was in the 4's. In august/2014 went back up to 10.7. Since May i've been taking Synthroid .175. I need to know is it possible forthe thyroid to fluctate that far. What's the best solution.

Brief Answer:
How is this medication taken?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this fluctuating levels in your thyroid numbers despite having achieved good control with the same dosage. My thinking is that you may have a recent diet habit that interferes with the normal drug absorption. This would mean that the same amount of drug taken would not be as effective as before.

Consumption of certain foods may affect synthroid absorption thereby necessitating adjustments in dosing. Soybean flour (infant formula), cotton seed meal, walnuts, and dietary fiber may bind and decrease the absorption of levothyroxine sodium from the GI tract. If you do take these food types, please consider staying away from.

Let me hear from you before concluding about this. How do you feel? Are you having any signs of hypothyroidism?

I wish you well.
