Posted on Fri, 7 Aug 2015
Question: I have a loved one in the hospital ER. Question, what would cause a quickly raising and falling of blood pressure? She also has severe edema following a stay in the hospital from last Friday to Monday with dehydration and UTI. She has a BP 96/64 that rapidly changes to low BP 72/52 and back up again, and down again. 4 ups and downs in the last 12 hours. 12 noon was 96/64 heart 115 - checked every 30 minutes - by 2 PM 72/52 heart 85 - called the ambulance.
We live in a rural area and the doc has no idea what is causing this

Detailed Answer:
hello XXXXXXX
I am Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD
I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM.
Basically I understand from information given by you that patient has UTI,dehydration and fluctuating BP.
As such i need more information viz.Her kidney functions, electrolytes,ECG,Blood sugar level etc. to give you proper guidance.
However in view of basic illness of UTI and Dehydration, I can presume that she is heading to Septicaemia that means bacteria and infection is spreading into blood stream. This condition leads to low blood pressure.some fluctuation can be explained on basis of dehydration as well.
I presume that correction of dehydration and use of antibiotics will gradually stabilize her status. But as I mentioned earlier that I need many additional information to predict the course and outcome. If you please furnish her exact clinical information and all investigations ,i would be quite happy to guide you further,
My best wishes
Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.
