What Causes Foul Smelling Nasal Odor?
Question: Hello, My nine year old son has currently develop seasonal allergy and noticed that he has developed very bad breath. It seems to have developed in his nose and when he blows his nose the mucus smells horribly. I did a saline wash in his nose, which seemed to help quite a bit. But it comes back. I feel horrible for him and wondering what is needed at this point. I had taken him to the doctor and he prescribed antibiotics and said it was a sinus infection. As well I give him a spray at night which is a chortezone. Although the smell has been not as bad since the meds, it is still there. When he blows his nose, it is very mucus and has an odor. I am sad, because he has now developed a complex because of it. Is there anything else I can do??
Brief Answer:
Looks like acute bacterial rhinosinusitis- recovering
Detailed Answer:
Hi.....I have just read through your query. This looks like a LM acute bacterial rhinosinusitis which is on the recovery path.
Whatever you are quoting is not uncommon. The foul smell is classical in bacterial infections.
The saline washes you have done are Perfectly right.
Now coming to what else you can do -
1. Warm saline gargles thrice a day.
2. Gentle nose blowing as and when required.
3. Saline nasal drops like Nasivion-S nasal drops 1 drop in each nostril if the nose is blocked 4-6th hourly once.
Usually it will take 2 weeks for all the mucus and smell to get cleared up.
