Question: My baby is 3weeks old & has been stooling all night & now very weak. Bought ORS solution with zinc sulphate but scared to administer the zinc sulphate considering his age. Please tell me what to do?

Brief Answer:
Possible viral gastroenteritis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation your baby is in.

1. I need to have more information regarding the stooling of your baby:
- the color?
- consistency?
- how often he has passed the motion?
- are you breastfeeding or giving formula milk?
- how long did the stooling last: only last night or other days too?

2. If you are breastfeeding, and your baby is not vomiting, I advise to breast feed him frequently, as breast milk has protective effects in diarrhea.

3. Zinc sulphate can be given in babies, however, I advise to consult with his pediatrician first.

4. Continue giving ORS and start probiotics to normalize his intestinal flora.

5. If the diarrhea won't stop in the next couple of days or his health situation is not good by end of this day, I advise to consult with his pediatrician for further evaluations and treatment.

Wish fast recovery!
