What Causes Frequent Bowel Movements In Children?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: Hello. My son is 1 year and 20 days of age. We have recently started to give him cow milk instead of the powder milk from Nestle. However we have noticed that he his bowel movements have increased since then to 6-8 times a day. He is passing thin water like stools. He did not have a habit to pass stools when asleep, which has changed too. Is it a side effect of the cows milk? Can you please advice any alternative or details on the situation.

Brief Answer:
Many children do not tolerate cow milk well.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. The mentioned problem of increased frequency and loose consistency indeed seems to be an effect of giving cow milk. It seems that the child is not able to digest the milk properly and hence the changes observed. I would insist you to withhold giving cow milk. Furthermore, at this age, milk is practically an optional food item provided that you provide the nutritional ingredients otherwise. The child needs to be given semi solids and you can shift exclusively to semisolids in addition to little of mother's breast milk that he might get.

You can give your child in mashed form any among: khichdi (prepared by boiling rice and pulses along with vegetables), boiled potatoes, grated fruits, ripe bananas etc.

Hope that helps.
