default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: I HAVE OCD AND IAM BEING TREATED FOR CML-(TAKING GLEEVEC NOW FOR 13 YEARS) AND HAVE NO VISIBLE SIGNS OF CANCER. PROBLEMS NUMEROUS BOWEL MOVEMENTS THAT HURT AND MUSCLE SPASMS, WHERE, IF I DONT GET UP AND PUT MY FEET ON THE FLOOR I WILL EXPERIENCE SEVERE PAIN, IN ADDITION TO THAT I HAVE MUSCLE CRAMPS WHEN I STRETCH OR MOVE A CERTAIN WAY, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Also I would like to know about memory loss Iam having a lot of short term memory loss and can forget things that happened a month or two. and the inability to pick up on things that should be obvious with my ocd. Could I get something different, like a new type of meds that would help me focus more and loose this overwhelming effect of meds. Also is there any truth that Dronabinol ? helps with OCD

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The complaints of excessive bowel movements, muscle spasm or cramps and poor memory could be due to

: Side effect of drugs specifically
Prozac- can cause weakness/excessive bowel movements/tiredness/poor concentration
Gabapentin- can cause excessive bowel movements/dizziness and drowsiness leading to poor memory
Clonazepam and lorazepam- can cause poor memory/loose stools
Trazodone- can cause muscular pain/spasms/poor memory due to drowsiness.

So your symptoms seem to be due to side effects of multiple drug use. You can consult your psychiatrist to reduce dose and taper off the drugs according to relief in your symptoms.

Regarding Dronabinol use, it is not used or treat OCD. It mainly treats vomiting/nausea and poor appetite induced by chemotherapy. SO do not take it to treat OCD.

OCD can be controlled by taking exposure and response prevention therapy. It is a type of psychotherapy which is side effect free. You can discuss it with your psychiatrist along with Cognitive Behaviour therapy.

OCD is usually not controlled by single drug use. So no medication is safe. You have to depend more upon psychotherapy then pharmacotherapy to control it without side effects.

Hope it will help you.

Thanks.
Take care.
