What Causes Frequent Coughing Attacks During The Day?
Question: My daughter has been having frequent coughing attacks during the day and especially at night for 10 days. The cough is unproductive and she has no other symptoms. She had a virus with cough 4 weeks ago and went almost 2 weeks without a cough before it returned. The doctor thought it may be walking pneumonia or bronchitis and started her on zithromax Sunday. Her daytime cough is better but her cough at night is worse. I have been giving her Delsym at night. She recently developed a runny nose but no fever or sore throat. Should I be concerned that the antibiotics are not working? Her older sisters have asthma. Could she have that? She is not wheezing and said she has no problems breathing. The doctor said her lungs sound clear. Should I take her back to see her pediatrician?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. Your daughter probably has a post nasal drip as her cough is worse fatre lying down and has a runny nose.
2. Get an X-ray Skull Lateral view to look for adenoid hypertrophy and an X-ray PNS (Para Nasal Sinuses) Water's view to rule out sinusitis.
3. Request your paediatrician to examine her and add an anti-histamine, an anti-leukotriene, a mucolytic and anti-reflux medication. Regular steam inhalation will help. In the short term, a cough syrup containing codeine may be useful.
4. Use honey based home remedies to soothe the throat.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
