Posted on Mon, 18 Sep 2017
Question: For about 1 week I have been experiencing an urgent need to urinate (say hourly) and there is a mild burning sometimes. I am 74, 6' 4", and 200 lb. male with no obvious health issues. Flow has weakened over the past several years but is at a steady rate. PSA tests in past year have been in low range.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

Your symptoms sound very suspicious for a urinary tract infection. Typical symptoms of a urinary tract infection include increased urinary frequency and urgency and sometimes burning with urination.

In older males, inflammation of the prostate can sometimes cause difficulty with completely emptying the bladder. This can predispose to increased risk for urinary tract infection.

I suggest that you contact your primary care doctor to discuss your symptoms. Your doctor may send a prescription for an antibiotic for you or he might request that you come to the clinic for evaluation and to have a complete your analysis performed.

I suspect that your symptoms will improve significantly after treatment with a good antibiotic. Please contact your doctor to discuss.

Thank you again for sending your question.

Sincerely,

Dr. GALAMR
