Posted on Fri, 5 Jun 2015
Question: Hi, i am experiencing a lot of pain and very frequent urinations with this herpes outbreak! The 500 mg Valacyclovir isn't working much. I've never had to take medication this long (approx 4 days) to see positive results. Can you tell me whats going on? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Analgaesics required to be taken.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query at HCM.

I understand your concern and situation.

1. It seems you had been having infection since 4 days. You are having herpetic neuralgia which is usually seen and is self limiting and will go gradually. Complete your viral treatment for 7 days. I suggest that you may try over the counter analgesic like acetaminophen. If there is no relief then you may switch to gabapentin 300 mg at bedtime. I believe it will be quite beneficial and you will be able to do your daily activities.

2. As far as urinary frequency is concerned it is due to herpes infection only. It will resolve in some days with resolution of symptoms. You can get a urine routine microscopy examination done. If symptoms persists you must get evaluation done for urinary tract by kidney function test, culture and ultrasound to rule out any pathology.

3. Refrain from sexual activities till active herpes. Practice barrier methods during intercourse if any.

Take care.

Thanks a lot Doctor. I also want to add, since I've been in so much pain, for the past day or two day, I've been taking two pills twice a day, hoping the pain will disappear. I will start taking 1 pill daily as prescribed, along with the acetaminophen. So happy I have some on hand from gum surgery!
