What Causes Gas,constipation And Increased Appetite After A Stomach Flu?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: Hi, I had symptoms of a stomach flu 2 weeks ago and still feel severe gas, constipation, and bloating so much that it's either making me wake up at night or causing me to eat more because I feel sluggish and need the energy. I have taken probiotics , exercised, avoided dairy and alcohol, and cut down on sugar. Do I need antibiotics? When will this end? Sticking to the BRAT seems to make it worse but eating fruits and vegetables seem to make me more gassy. Thank you!
Brief Answer:
Advised digestive enzymes; no need for antibiotics
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your medical history carefully and feel sorry for the situation you are in.
It is normal to get maldigestion after passing flu as it will take time for the intestinal mucosa to get back to its normal functioning.
It is good that you are following a strict diet together with taking probiotics.
If I was your caring doctor would add digestive enzymes for 4 weeks. There is no need to start antibiotics unless fever or other bacterial complication would appear.
Hope it helped! Do not hesitate to contact me again if you have further queries!

What do you mean by bacterial complications? Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Bacterial infection can thrive after virosis...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
Thank you for following up.
A viral infection usually, decreases the immune defense. Thus, bacterial infection can thrive.
At your case, you are not reporting symptoms related to bacterial infection (no fever, no diarrhea, no blood in stool). You have already passed the flu days, so, there is no need for antibiotics as they will worsen your symptoms. Instead, probiotics are highly recommended to optimize intestinal flora.
All the best!
