Brief Answer:
investigation is required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

although the fresh blood you've vomited is probably a Mallory-Weiss syndrome, which is a self limited bleeding injury of the esophagus (an esophageal tear due to forceful vomiting), investigation is required to make sure that no other more serious event has taken place. A bleeding peptic ulcer for example could also cause bleeding and vomiting blood. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is required to find out.

The symptom of heartburn is indicative of a chronic "irritation" which could represent gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophagitis or ulcers.

Prilosec is OK to use and will help with the heartburn but the investigation is an essential step in the management of such situations.

Kind Regards!
