What Causes Green Stool In Infant?
My baby is three months old now. We are worried that her motion is in green color. is that fine or should we take any precautions?
It is normal, do not worry.
Detailed Answer:
Congratulations on having a baby. Let me mention that breast milk is the best food for a baby and there can be substitutes for the same. You have not mentioned whether the child is exclusively breast fed or whether supplemental feeds are being given. I would be glad if you revert back with this information.
In case of an exclusively breast fed baby, greenish stools are normal and you need not worry about it. It basically indicates rapid transit through the large bowels and is not a cause of concern. For a baby of this age, passing stool 10 times a day is as normal as passing stool once in 10 days so long as stool is not hard. Some amount of loose stool in a baby is acceptable and you need not worry about that too.
You need not take any precautions for the condition you have mentioned
She is not completely on breast feed. Once or twice in a day we are feeding her lactogen 1 milk powder and also she doesnt pass motion regularly , if she passes three or four times in one day , she wont pass any on the next day, Is this ok?? And now she is not taking mother's milk directly, she is taking milk only in milk bottle. So, we are feeding mother's milk also through milk bottle. Is this ok?? And from when we can provide farex/cerelac to her(she is in fourth month now)?? And which is better one??
Stool habits normal
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Let me once again emphasize that breast milk is the best feed for a baby. If it seems to be inadequate top feeds need to be given. These formula feeds are generally sweeter and hence once begun, many babies prefer bottle feeding to breast milk. Weaning with cereal based semi solid food is recommended from 6 months of age but trials of such feeds may be started from 4th month if breast milk is inadequate as in your case. Home made rice based semi solid diet prepared by boiling together with pulses and vegetables are better than cerelac and farex. The stool habits you mentioned are normal and you need not worry about it unless stool is hard in consistency.
