What Causes Greenish Pus Discharge From Eyes In Children?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Dec 2014
Question: Dear doctor,

I saw little bit green colour puss coming out eyes of my 4 year old daughter for last 2 days. She has not complained of any pain or any other problem.
It is not too many times or too much quantity.
We visited a pediatrician and he prescribed a antibiotic syrup - "SENSICLAV" along with regular washing of eyes.

Should we administer this antibiotic syrup or should we visit an ophthalmologist?
Is it OK if we continue washing her eyes and observe for another day or two?

Brief Answer:
conjunctivitis

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.
I don't feel your daughter needs oral antibiotics. What she needs is local anti biotic drops and ointment if pus is more.Other than frequent washing, there are antibiotic drops available, moxifloxicin or ciprofloxicine eye drops are available and they can be put in 4-5times a day and should resolve the issue. We use antibiotic eye ointment at bed time if infection is more,in your case it is a mild infection and will be controlled by local eye drops only.
Do get back to us in case some point is to be discussed regarding your daughter.
