What Causes Halos And Light In Vision?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Feb 2015
Question: I last saw my eye doctor on December 1, 2014. He checked my eyes and I do have an unripe cataract. I told him I have been using Latisse since April. Now I only use it once every three or four days. I have gotten new lenses for a new prescription. Now, lately, I see halos or starbursts around lights while driving at night. Any ideas on the cause? Is it the cataract or the Latisse? Is it the new lenses? They are anti glare, as my lenses have always been. Why this sudden change?

Brief Answer:
Your immature cataract or increase in eye pressure could be the cause

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the details provided by you. Immature cataract is known to cause halos or some blurriness in vision. This could be the cause of the halos or the starbursts around lights that you report. It is unlikely to be due to the new lenses.

Latisse is generally given for treatment of increased eye pressure (intra-ophthalmic pressure or IOP) which rises in a condition called glaucoma. Although Latisse is unlikely to be the cause of such problems, glaucoma can definitely cause halos, especially of rainbow colour. It might be that your use of Latisse is inadequate and hence the symptoms.

I would strongly suggest that you visit your ophthalmologist and get the IOP checked by a simple process called tonometry. A Slit-lamp exam would also help in assessing the cause of the symptoms. There could be progression of the disease causing the symptoms. Based on the report, your doctor would be able to comment on why there has been a sudden change.

Hope that helps.

I would like to know why the symptoms occurred rather suddenly. Could it be that the cataract is growing quickly? Yes, I will telephone my doctor for an appointment. I just want to know, since I was there on December 1, why the doctor did not comment on my situation then. If he saw something wrong, he would have said so surely. He is a conscientious as far as I know.

Brief Answer:
Glaucoma may be the cause of sudden deterioration

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Rather than the cataract ripening suddenly, I feel more in favour of the eye pressure rising suddenly. This could give rise to the mentioned symptoms. The doctor did not probably find anything wrong at the point when he examined you, but he would need to take a closer look in light of the new situation.
