What Causes Hanging Of Soft Tooth At The Site Of Tooth Extraction?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I just had one of my teeth extract. They placed stiches on the opening however, I suddenly noticed something hanging from the area. It looks almost like a large tooth hanging. It is soft in texture, almost gel like. Not sure what it is!

Brief Answer:
Can be an extra tooth or dental tumor/odontome

Detailed Answer:
Hello, XXXXXX
Thank you for consulting with HCM.
This is Dr. Dipti Singh here to answer your query.

As you are mentioning that you got your teeth extracted and now you are noticing something hanging there which is soft in texture and gel like, then it cannot be a natural tooth.

Based on the photographs sent by you, the substance looks similar to tooth. It can be possible that below the tooth which was extracted there might be an extra tooth called as supernumerary tooth, and now after removal of tooth it has come out. Or it can be a dental tumor known as odontome which is present below the tooth and similar in appearance to the tooth. In both the conditions you should not take tension, as they can be removed.

But for confirmation of both you have to visit a good Oral Surgeon, as he will examine it properly and if needed remove it, otherwise it can create pain in future, even a dental x-ray should be done of that area.

Till you visit an oral surgeon you should continue with the medications, which was prescribed by the dentist.

Hope it will help you.

The extraction was performed today. How can a tooth appear in a couple of hours?? I think this is some kind of bandage. Have you ever seen this kind of bandage/gauze? Maybe I didn't notice it at first and now I do. When an extraction is performed, do they usually fill the hole with something or do they just stitch the incision?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of gauze is less as fibers of gauze are not visible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, XXXXXX

Actually this extra tooth or odontome can be attached to the lower surface epithelium of the tooth, so if the doctor might have not noticed it in an x-ray, then it can come after removal of the tooth.

According to me the possibility of bandage is less , as the fibers of the bandage are not visible in it.

When just one tooth extraction is done, gauze is not placed.

So better that you visit an oral surgeon and get a proper treatment done with -ray.

Hope it will help you.
