What Causes Hard Veins To Develop Under The Skin?
Question: Hi, I'm feeling slightly anxious as Friday eve I discovered a vein under my left arm that is visibly hard and showing under my skin, there was a small lump at the top of it but that's gone now, but the enlarged vein is still present. I checked my breasts and there doesn't seem to be any lumps? What could this be ? X

Hi again, I'm 47 and female with no other health concerns or trauma, no previous operations. The enlarged vein is not painful or tender to touch
Brief Answer:
Commonest cause: Idiopathic thrombophlebitis
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Such enlarged vein in female patients of your age can be due to a condition called idiopathic thrombophlebitis wherein the specific cause may not be found. It is usually self limiting and may not need any specific treatment unless the cause is found.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations like color doppler of the upper affected limb, ultrasonography of the breasts and armpits to see for any lumps that are not palpable and blood investigations done and give you a reference for the concerned specialist.
Unless a specific cause is not found please take the following precaustion:
Do not fondle with the vein, no local applications and no massage at all.
Do not allow dehydration by taking plenty of oral fluids.
Give rest to the affected limb.
Have regular follow up and further management as may be advised depending upon the additional findings.
Take care.
Please give follow up.
