What Causes Headache And Pressure In The Head After Suffering From A Concussion?

Posted on Tue, 30 May 2017
Question: Hi , I hit my head 36 hours ago... bumped top of my head pretty hard when getting into car. No passing out, no stars just pain. Well now 36 hours ago I still have headache.. mostly left side as this was side that got hit most ( on top) ... feels like head pressure, headache ( not major but lets say 4 out of 10) . Little pain around nose ( but I did have sinus pressure befroe), this head pressure and headache seems to move around a bit. I am just worried that this still can lead to brain bleed. I have no neuro signs.. pupils same size, react to light, no balance issues, no thinking problems, no slower ( just sluggish a bit because of headache) , no nausea or vomiting, can touch my nose with closed eyes... Only problem headache and pressure. Is this normal, what chances I have to get major brain bleed? Neck feels fine.. no stiffness maybe feels little bruised but its not bruised. Thank you

Brief Answer:
No bleeding risk.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

The highest risk for a brain hemorrhage after trauma is in the first 24 hours, afterwards it is very unlikely. There are some rare exceptions but usually in the elderly or patients with conditions affecting coagulation, not young healthy individuals such as yourself.
Furthermore from a clinical point of view there is no indication of that either. Some headache after a hit on the head is to be expected, nothing unusual about that. It would be worrying only if a case of progressively increasing intense headache. Other accompanying symptoms to watch for would be vomiting, seizures, double vision or vision loss, weakness or numbness of the limbs on one side, confusion or changed in behavior.

So there is no indication of any bleeding which together with the fact that 36 hours have already passed makes the chances of getting a brain bleed close to zero.
