What Causes Headache, Body And Abdominal Pain In A Child When Diagnosed With Craniopharyngioma?
Question: My 7 year old son was diagnosed with "Sellar-Suprasellar Creniophreyngioma with HCP".
Procedure done on 9th XXXXXXX 2016: Right pterional craniotomy with gross total extention of Creniophreyngioma.
As per doctor, 90% tumour was removed and about 10% remained.
For last 25 days, my son is complaining low grade headache & stomach ache & body pain.
Now since 3 months past after surgery , doctor has suggested MRI with contrast test. For contract MRI, he need to be punctured to fix canola. As he is having swelling all over body, his vein is not easily seen and he might feel uncomfortable in contrast MRI.
I want to know if he goes for plain MRI, is that fine. Is there really vast difference in both contract and without contrast MRIs for practical reasons.
I want to go for plain MRI as it would be comfortable for him as he can get it done without sedation even. Kindly suggest what should I do. Also lemme know, what doctor does if he doesn't find vein. Tomorrow MRI is scheduled. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Plain MRI can be a reasonable alternative
Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam
I can certainly understand your concern.
Yes indeed you can go for MRI scan without contrast for evaluation of residual craniopharyngioma in case if there is difficulty in finding for the veins.
But overall, MRI with contrast is superior to plain MRI to assess the blood supply of the residual tumor.
With special effects leg venis can be traced with the help of tourniquet or a blood pressure cuff tied around the extremity.
Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

Contract MRI is certainly better then plain one. but if I insist for plain MRI, will doctor be able to assess fully what he wants to. or it may require a repeat MRI.
Brief Answer:
Plain MRI can be encouraged
Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.
Yes, your doctor will certainly able to consider plain MRI and reasonably assess to a significant extent of the residual craniopharyngioma.
A repeat MRI plain may or may not be asked later.
Thank you.

My son is 7 year old. Is repeated MRI be harmful for such a young child. Is there any time gap which is advisable between the MRIs.
Brief Answer:
Not harmful
Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.
Repeat MRI is not harmful in children as MRI doesn't deliver radiation to study the organs.
Hence, time gap is not advised
Thank you.
